As I’ve been knocked out with the flu all week, I haven’t really done much interesting that I can share with you. I didn’t leave my house on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, and only did so today for a bit and it totally exhausted me. I’ve lived off a steady diet of water, healing tea, ramen and oranges. I did manage to write a bit (not a lot) though, and I can recommend that you watch Lost Girl (which I was really proud to discover is Canadian…yay!). I also read a lot of stuff, so I thought I’d share another round of links!

1. A very inspiring editorial on mental illness via Huffington Post Canada

2. Literary criticism in the 21st Century via Time

3. 5 Real life places straight out of fairy tales via Cracked. I really want to visit some of these places. I’ve already been to Neuschwanstein. The hoards of tourists somehow made it much less impressive.

4. Latest Game of Thrones Season 2 character photos via HBO. If you’re a fan, you’ve probably already seen them on Facebook, Twitter or everywhere else on the net, but since they’re awesome, I thought I’d share them again. Plus, here, they’re bigger. I love to see how the books come alive in the series. April 1 can’t come fast enough!

And, that’s all folks. I’m hoping for a speedy recovery!

It’s been one of those weekends where I feel I need to make a few changes. Maybe that “new year” feeling, which seemed absent at the actual beginning of the year, is finally kicking in. Or maybe it’s the fact that, after a very mild autumn and winter with unseasonably warm weather, we’re finally getting a cold spell. I started spring cleaning yesterday, despite the fact that it’s not yet spring. I started by going through my lingerie and swimsuit drawers. It’s something I haven’t done in ages. I threw out a lot of stuff. I just got a new order of underwear in from La Senza UK (I have yet to find anywhere that sells underwear I like in Germany that also has good sales), so I figured it was as good a time as any to throw out all the older stuff that I never actually wear. I also threw out old, misshapen bras and a few “what was I thinking” purchases from when I was around 22. These included a copper lamé bikini from American Apparel, which I really can’t explain. I actually do NOT know why I have it. See for yourself:
Scary
Scarier

If you’re asking yourself “why would you buy that?”, I’m asking myself the same thing.

I also hung out some fabric and coats outside, because moths descended on my apartment this summer and I want to make sure they’re all dead and wont come back. I really chose my moment well, because as I was letting them sit out there to get cold, this happened:
Snow
(sorry for the picture quality…I took it with my phone).

Luckily it was fairly powdery snow, so nothing got too damp and I just brushed it off and hauled it all back inside. It’s supposed to get colder next week, and it will be clear out, so I’ll finish my moth-obliterating then.

In the evening I met a friend for wine at Weinerei, which is always a great place to go if you like wine and are on a budget. It’s a pretty well-known wine bar where you pay 2 Euro for a glass, which you free-pour, and then when you leave, you pay what you think you drank. They also do food, usually a pasta dish, soup and salad, and it works along the same principle, but I’d already made nachos with home-made salsa and guacamole. When we left we got fries at the curry place on Rosenthaler Platz, and I noticed they had hot sauce, which they’d labelled with degrees of hotness. I love hot sauce on my fries, but I was a bit skeptical that it would actually be spicy, since most Germans have a very low spice tolerance. Still, to play it safe, i ordered 2 (out of 4) and I have to say, I’m pretty humbled. It was spicy. Very, very spicy. I had to go to the Späti next door and get a carton of milk to dull down the burning. If you like spicy food and find yourself in Berlin (or live here) check it out. I dare you to try 4…apparently you have to sign a release form!

Today is low key. I’m continuing my cleaning project and making a cheese, olive and rosemary loaf. I’m also reworking a short story I did years ago, which I’d shelved for 9 years, but I’ve decided it has promise if I heavily rework it and change the setting.

This may be the laziest post ever, but bear with me…I’ll write a real post later! I have some ideas floating around in my head, but I need to do a bit more studying and essay writing first. Until then, I’ll fulfill my blogging addiction by sharing some interesting things I’ve read over the week!

Enjoy!

I’m a bit embarrassed about it, but I really want to see American Reuinion:

The other three movies were silly, but I admit I kind of enjoyed them. They always seemed to come out when I was in the same phases of life they were depicting. Now, my high school reunion will be this summer, and there’s an American Pie movie about their reunion.

I have a lot of trouble finding trousers that fit in Germany. It’s not that they’re too long; I can always hem them. it’s the fact that even the waistlines are cut for much taller people. At best I get looks that invoke the 1970s or Marlene Dietrich. At worst I get Urkel pants.

As a result, I buy jeans and trousers online and when I visit the UK and Canada, and keep them until they are far past their prime. I recently managed to let go of a couple of pairs of jeans that were threadbare in places and were full of holes and repurposed them into my old clothes quilt. But I’m at a bit of conundrum. I have a few pairs of trousers that I love, and they’re some of the only ‘dressy’ pairs I have. I’d like to keep a smarter wardrobe, even though a lot of my life revolves around a casual atmosphere. I’m not, at heart, a casual dresser. I have several pairs of trousers that are too short, as I grew a bit after I moved here (unusual but I’ve read you can grow until you’re 25 or so). I have a pair that I love, and they’re short but narrow-legged, so they still look ok with ballet flats and heels; however they’re quite faded and I’m questioning re-dying them (black is an easy colour to dye!) Others are not so easy, as they are wider-legged. I feel at this point options could include cutting them off into capris or shorts, adding some sort of trim to the bottom to lengthen them, or sewing the legs narrower so that they suit the shorter length. Decisions….

I’ve been very bad. I haven’t posted in about a month!
Lots of things going on here. Last week, I started an internship, and it’s full time for the summer. My parents will be here next week as well, so I’ve been sort of settling into a new pace of life (meaning, being busy for a change). I’m slowly starting to get back into a rhythm that I knew very well in high school. Back in those days I was somehow able to go to school and a million lessons and after school clubs, do my homework, write and play music, sew and keep my social life. I’m getting into that again, partly through sleeping a little less and picking my social engagements carefully, but also by wasting less time when I’m at home. TV is double tasked during meals and sewing!
Anyhow, I have some interesting things to post in the next while. I’m making some collars (as in shirt collars, not pet collars), and spats, and I may even get a tutorial up. I’ve also made a couple of fun pieces I want to post, and a garden update is long overdue (though I should probably weed it before I post any picks….it’s a little overgrown!)

I’ve been bitten by the travel bug again lately, and I’ve also had a strong urge to do more things outdoors. I’ve been cycling around the city a lot for transportation, and I thought it might be nice to do a day trip by bike. I haven’t biked “just for fun” since I lived back home, and by “back home” I -really- mean it, because the last time was when I lived with my parents in Campbell River. Growing up, I used to go on rides all the time through the forest and through town, but in my adult life I’ve only used bicycles for transportation. Today changed that!

I researched online where I should go and how I should get there, and I decided that since I’ve never been to Müggelsee, it would be a good place to start. I took Europaweg R1 to the East, which I found to be a really great route. It’s also possible to get there any number of other ways, but I thought I’d experiment with using the “official” bike routes, as I have ideas of maybe doing a longer trip later!

I started in Alexanderplatz, not really because it’s better in any way, but the route runs through it and I live a 5 minute cycle away.

The cycle took me through Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg to Treptow, and I went through Treptower Park. I love this park, and I hardly ever go there because it’s not in my neighbourhood. It’s right on the Spree, and there are a lot of great cafes, beer gardens and boat shacks all along the river. One of the beer gardens has a stage, and there was a live jazz band playing. If I had been there to lounge around, I would have loved to have a beer and listen!

(I somehow find tagging an old, large tree like this to be really disrespectful, like tagging a church or a monument or something…I thought this tree was great though because you don’t see so many large ones like this in Berlin)

(There are a few of these along the cycle route….I never noticed them before until I was looking for the cycling stuff!)

(A view of the abandoned amusement park, Spreepark. I find it really haunting, and it just looks like it was just left to totally rot. I have a love of things like this that are just left behind. It’s like imagining what life would be like after an apocalypse).

P1030414

I had to take a water taxi to continue my route. They are run by the BVG, but after almost 6 years living here, I had NO idea they ran water taxis at all! You learn new things when you cycle!

P1030415

After getting lost for a bit, I cycled over through Alt-Koepenick, another place I’d never been before. I’ve been to and through Koepenick before but never this part. It’s quite picturesque, and they were having some sort of festival going on. I walked through it a bit.

(This part of Koepenick is so picturesque, but then you ride on and have these reminders that you’re still in the heart of East Berlin).

Eventually I did reach the lake, and I crossed over the river just before it to poke around Friedrichshagen for a bit. It’s an interesting district that used to be a haven for artists, and now it’s still lovely. There are still a few run down buildings but a lot of really pretty ones as well. If I weren’t so keen on living in the city center and wanted to live somewhere a bit quieter, it would be great! Afterward, I cycled around the lake and through the forest to Müggelheim, which sounded like an actual place but really wasn’t.

After a bit of riding around, I decided it was time to head home, as I wanted to get back in time to call my dad and say happy father’s day. I passed a fruit stand, which is another thing I remember growing up in Canada. We used to drive along the old highway and sometimes in the summer, there would be fruit for sale from the Okanagan. At that point, it started to pour down rain (LITERALLY…I felt like someone was pouring buckets of water over my head!) It was a good time to pick up some fruit and wait until the rain got a lot less violent. It never stopped totally though and I was pretty wet when I got home, and happy to wear sweat pants and slippers!

I didn’t intentionally blog this but somehow I did. I must have mindlessly pressed the “blog” button on Polyvore.
A few words on Polyvore; I love it! It allows you to play magazine editor and share what you do. It just feels like a step up from the collage books I keep with stuff I love from magazines.

I’ve been sort of MIA lately….exams have sort of sucked up my time and I haven’t really done much of any proper cooking or sewing, and I left my garden in kind of an infant state. I hope it’s ok….a few days after I left Berlin, a huge cold spell struck, and I’m not sure if a frost happened or not but if it did I’m not sure the seedlings made it through that. I guess I still have time to do more seeds when I get back if they didn’t make it, but it’s harsh because that’s a lot of work (about 8 weeks of effort) gone. I guess there’s nothing I can do about it though.
Anyway, I’m in London for my exams, and the weather is great! I’m a bit high strung and stressed out though. My life kind of consists of studying and watching Dawson’s Creek, tweeting and making sets on Polyvore.
